Operational Delivery

This is a core WPA specialism underpinned by significant line management experience in rail operations. We have an excellent understanding of operational dynamics including strategic safety management, formal systems engineering and new systems and new trains projects and have been closely involved in many projects aimed at improving operational efficiency and safety. WPA can help bring a more consistent, structured and systematic approach to every aspect of safe operational delivery and to the management of change and innovation.

Example projects include:

  •  Review of project plans and operational readiness for introduction of Driver Controlled Operation on 12-car Thameslink services between Bedford and Brighton

  •  Devise a berthing and stabling strategy for a TOC taking delivery of a number of large new train fleets, taking account of timetable, servicing & maintenance and crewing requirements, and ensuring that sufficient useable capacity was maintained and available to facilitate the rolling stock cascade arrangements

  •  Preparing the Concept of Operations for the Network Rail Digital Railway Programme and working as part of the wider Systems Engineering team on the architectural design

  •  Review of LOROL Control and Command arrangements

  •  Development and establishment of the new fault reporting centre for RfL at New Cross Gate for the East London Line

  •  Supporting Transnet Freight Rail (South Africa) in improving their core operational processes, focusing on efficiency, performance and safety

  •  Review of Network Rail Operations & Customer Services efficiency proposals for CP4

  •  Development of the Operations Manual for use by Operations Managers within National Express; later published by the Institution of Railway Operators as required reading for students on the IRO’s Degree Programme.
